No Starch Press, a San Francisco publisher of computing books, has been one of the main publishers of unofficial LEGO books since 2001, when Joe Nagata's LEGO Mindstorms Idea Book came out. Its books are written by fans and builders rather than by LEGO, which shows in titles such as The Unofficial LEGO Builder's Guide, a book of building techniques, and The Unofficial LEGO Technic Builder's Guide.

Robotics runs through the list, following Mindstorms from the early RCX years to NXT and EV3, and later BOOST. Other books treat LEGO as an art and a hobby, like The Cult of LEGO, a look at the adult fan community, the Beautiful LEGO photo books and The Art of the Brick by the artist Nathan Sawaya. There are also books of building ideas for castles, trains, space, towns and micro-scale cities.
