The LEGO Universal Building Set Supplemental theme, active from 1969 to 1976, offered additional elements to enhance and expand basic LEGO sets. Key sets include 990-2 Trees and Signs and its earlier variant 990 Trees and Signs, which provided decorative elements to add realism to LEGO creations. The 797 2 Large Baseplates Grey/White set offered foundational pieces for building larger and more stable structures. 1976 LEGO Sets
In 1976, town-focused play deepened with emergency and civic sets—police, fire, and services—while the train range saw continued refinement of 12V equipment and rolling stock. Basic Building Sets emphasized open-ended creativity. Fully fledged Space and Castle themes would follow in 1978.
