LEGO 161-1 Battery Wagon is a Trains 4.5V / 12V set released in 1972, containing 8 pieces. Also known as Battery Wagon with Signal and Direction Switch, it includes a battery wagon with a red base and blue detachable roof, wires, a lid, and a signal piece for use with LEGO motorized train sets. The wagon is designed to hold three C-cell batteries under the removable roof and has a side-mounted off-center switch for changing direction. It also features an under-mounted power interrupter button for starting or stopping the train, and the body carries an "International Transport" sticker.

“The 161 Battery wagon is a set for the 4.5 volt line. The purpose of this set is to send charge into the battery, the battery life last a lot longer then the battery box, but unfortunately, it only goes one direction at a time. A surprise I found, was that the battery wagon... More itself is one solid piece, cutting the number of pieces down, to 8 pieces! Those pieces being wires, a lid for the box, and a signal piece for the train set. The signal does the same thing as the 156: Signals.”

“To avoid the limitations imposed by the classic battery box, LEGO made a bold choice to produce a purpose-built battery wagon for trains. This would have been a significant investment in molding and manufacturing since this item would only benefit the train theme... More exclusively. In any case, this battery wagon served the train theme well—being released in no fewer than 10 variants in different body colors, wheels and couplers.”

About Trains 4.5V / 12V

In 1972 LEGO released the 4.5V and 12V train sets as part of the Blue Era which was named because of the rail color. These train sets used additional conductor rails mounted between the standard 4.5V rails and 12V motors contained in the same housings as the 4.5V motors, but with additional metal contacts attached to the bottom of the housings.

4.5V / 12V consists of 83 sets that ran from 1972 to 1986. As of today, 7750 Steam Engine with Tender is the most valuable 4.5V / 12V set with an estimated new/factory sealed value of $6,957.
