LEGO 723-1 Diesel Locomotive is a Trains 12V set released in 1970, containing 95 pieces. The set builds a red and black diesel locomotive from LEGO’s early blue-era train system, and it was designed to run on blue track with a motorized 4.5V-compatible engine. Its design is loosely based on the general style of European diesel shunter locomotives that were common in the 1960s and 1970s. A revised version was later issued in 1974 as 723-2 Diesel Locomotive, which added Deutsche Bahn branding with a DB sticker.

New and sealed listings currently range from $784 to $799. Based on current trends, this set could be valued near $506 within the next year.

“The Lego 732 Locomotive is very similar to the 112 Locomotive with Motor, but the differences here are that it didn’t come with any train tracks. This set includes 95 pieces including the 702 12v motor. It is an alternative for the more expensive train sets, so if you just... More want a train locomotive, this is the one.”

“The LEGO Trains Diesel Locomotive (Set 723) from 1970 is part of the early LEGO train system, featuring a diesel locomotive model. The set included 95 pieces, designed to run on LEGO's blue railway track system. It was notable for its simple design, typical of LEGO train sets from that era, and was compatible with LEGO's 4.5V motor system.”

About Trains 12V

In 1969 LEGO released the 12 volt train sets as part of the Blue Era which was named because of the rail color. These 12V train sets used additional conductor rails mounted between the standard 4.5V rails and 12V motors contained in the same housings as the 4.5V motors, but with additional metal contacts attached to the bottom of the housings.

12V consists of 17 sets that ran from 1969 to 1970. As of today, 722-2 12V Electric Train with 2 Wagons is the most valuable 12V set with an estimated new/factory sealed value of $1,277.
