“The Whirlwind Rescue from the Lego Technic series is another well-made model. It’s an almost realistic model of a helicopter built from approx. 500 parts, and it has some great functions. The Flex System allows the main rotor to be angled in all directions. The assembly is... More also fun, so its 5 stars are justifiable in the overall rating.”

“Set 8856, released in 1991, is the best helicopter ever released in the Technic line in my opinion. It's big and it's functional. This set is similar to a Sikorsky HH-60 or other Search and Rescue helicopter. It is literally packed with features. The main and tail rotor... More rotate, and there's even a cyclic which tilts the main rotor using the new flex system parts. The tricycle landing gear is retractable. A rescue winch on the port side can be stowed or deployed. Once deployed, the winch can be lowered with a ratchet system. The model is built almost entirely from beams pinned together at various angles. The flex system is even used as diagonal bracing on the tail boom.”

About Technic

TECHNIC is one of The LEGO Company's main lines based on creating detailed model machines and mechanical toys with specialized beams, axles, gears and connectors and primarily designed for older children and adults. The theme was first introduced as the Expert Builder series in 1977, but was officially renamed as TECHNIC in 1984. TECHNIC is still an active theme, and is one of the longest running themes in LEGO history. While most TECHNIC sets are vehicles that use pieces to mimic real vehicles, such as engine pieces, suspension, pneumatic, and transmission pieces, the TECHNIC parts have been used by various other System themes as well as LEGO Mindstorms.
