“The Merchant Boat has also doubled its number of minifigures but overall, there’s not a lot of change to mention for this set. It’s hard to improve on perfection apparently. The sticker at the front of the boat has been changed from ‘NC .1998’ to BL – 1998, likely... More referencing BrickLink and two more minifigures have been added but with this particular model, the BrickLink team didn’t see fit to change too much.”

About BrickLink Designer Program Series 4

The BrickLink Designer Program Series 4 is a fan-driven initiative where LEGO enthusiasts submit custom designs for potential production as official LEGO sets. The program involves a voting process to select finalists, followed by a crowdfunding phase where supporters can pre-order their favorite designs. Sets that reach a minimum of 3,000 pre-orders will be produced, with a cap of 30,000 units per set. The five selected sets for Series 4 are Wild West Train, Siege Encampment, Merchant Boat, Medieval Seaside Market and Riverside Scholars. Pre-ordering started on Februrary 4th, 2025 with production and shipment in July 2025. Both the Medieval Seaside Market and Siege Encampment sold out the first day.

Designer Program Series 4 was introduced in 2025 and currently consists of 5 sets. As of today, 910044 Wild West Train is the most valuable Designer Program Series 4 set with an estimated new/factory sealed value of $417.

Design background:
While the overall shape and design of this steamboat are entirely of my own imagination, my approach involved drawing inspiration from various references. From actual boat photography to paintings and concept art, each reference played a big role in shaping the final concept. The essence of the design lies in giving a manually crafted look to the boat, achieved through the incorporation of reclaimed elements from the Merchant's voyage. Experimenting with different colors and unusual shapes complements the desired final aesthetic.
