Insights

Released in 1979 and later retired, Rocket Launch Pad, a Classic Space kit tied to early launch-tower styling and the trio of classic spacemen, trades on long-running nostalgia and low surviving sealed supply, and its non-US origins and occasional modern homages introduce some volatility and substitution risk.

Set Facts

The set includes a rocket base with a collapsible launch tower, a control center with monitors and a dish antenna, a rocket, a ground vehicle with trailer, and three Classic Space astronaut minifigures: one in red and two in white.
The set was also called "Launch Pad" and was not sold in the United States, where a different set, 483 Alpha-1 Rocket Base, was released instead.
Rocket Launch Pad was designed by LEGO designer Jens Nygaard Knudsen.

Classic Space the Way it Was Meant to Be — “This is a good example of an excellent Classic Space set. I like the rocket launch pad and the rocket looks good too. The little rover seems fun to play with too. 1979 was a good year for Classic Space and this is the reason why.”

BrickEconomy Member Review

“The LEGO Rocket Launch Pad from 1979, also known as the Alpha-1 Rocket Base, is a standout from the early Classic Space era, featuring a rocket with transport vehicle, a spinning crane, and the iconic space minifigures. Its simple design and small piece count reflect the style of the time, yet it still offers solid functionality and alternate build possibilities. Though modest by today’s standards, it remains an important and highly valued set for fans of LEGO’s early space history.”

About Space Classic

Classic Space began in 1978, the same year as the LEGO minifigure, and it was one of the first three themes to use it, along with Castle and Town. The astronauts came in red and white at first, with yellow, black and blue added in the 1980s, all in the same suit with the planet logo on the chest and an air tank on the back. Unlike almost every space line after it, Classic Space had no villains, only explorers with rovers, rockets, lunar bases and grey crater baseplates.

Classic consists of 90 sets that ran from 1978 to 2015. As of today, 926 Command Center is the most valuable Classic set with an estimated new/sealed value of $4,820.

Summary

Space Classic Rocket Launch Pad set 920 was released in April 1979, retailing for $20, but has since been retired. New, unopened Rocket Launch Pad sets are valued at $1,009, while used sets can be found for $105 in good condition.
