Insights

Released in 1979, Astro Car is a Classic Space micro-vehicle tied to early-era branding and the white astronaut minifigure, and its short production run has left sealed copies scarce and occasionally thinly traded, while limited remake risk and steady nostalgic demand support its long-term collectability.

Eurobricks

“Primarily grey parts, as with many early space sets, the only exceptions being the mini-figure and a translucent green round piece. The mini-figure in this set is a classic white spaceman. This set is amazing and pretty much perfect. Every space fan should get it!”

Lego Maniacs' Guide

“There's not too much one can say about this set, with only 15 or so pieces and a vehicle which is only 7 studs long. This model was duplicated (to the piece) in 483-Alpha-1 Rocket Base, 493-Space Command Center, and 6970-Beta-1 Command Base. A similar version (with... More single-piece difference) appeared in 497/928-Galaxy Explorer.”

About Space Classic

Classic Space began in 1978, the same year as the LEGO minifigure, and it was one of the first three themes to use it, along with Castle and Town. The astronauts came in red and white at first, with yellow, black and blue added in the 1980s, all in the same suit with the planet logo on the chest and an air tank on the back. Unlike almost every space line after it, Classic Space had no villains, only explorers with rovers, rockets, lunar bases and grey crater baseplates.

Classic consists of 90 sets that ran from 1978 to 2015. As of today, 926 Command Center is the most valuable Classic set with an estimated new/factory sealed value of $4,799.

Summary

Space Classic Astro Car set 886 was released in April 1979, retailing for $2, but has since been retired. New, unopened Astro Car sets are valued at $215, while used sets can be found for $7 in good condition.
