The Lord of the Rings brought Peter Jackson's film trilogy of J.R.R. Tolkien's books into LEGO in 2012, the same year The Hobbit got sets of its own. The sets cover all three films, from Gandalf's cart arriving in the Shire and the fight on Weathertop to the Mines of Moria, Shelob's lair and the Black Gate. The hobbits stand on short legs, a head below the rest of the Fellowship.

The Battle of Helm's Deep was the large set of the first wave, and in 2013 10237 Tower of Orthanc followed as the biggest build of the line, Saruman's black tower with a brick-built Treebeard beside it. LEGO The Lord of the Rings, the video game by TT Games, came out late in 2012 and retold the films in bricks. The films returned to LEGO in 2023 as large display sets in the Icons line, starting with Rivendell.
