1959 LEGO Sets

In 1959 LEGO began a stronger international push beyond Denmark and its Scandinavian neighbors with LEGO being sold in Switzerland, France, Finland and the United Kingdom for the first time. In addition, LEGO France, British LEGO Ltd., LEGO Belgium and LEGO Sweden were established. As for new sets being produced, 1959 proved more of a lighter year with just a few new sets in production.

However, 1959 was an important year in that the "Futura" subdivision was established to develop ideas for new sets. LEGO Futura started in Billund with five employees, including a product development manager. Initially they developed new ideas for parts and sets, however, over time their responsibility expanded to include not only product design but also longer-range strategic development, including new technologies.
