The LEGO Samsonit Train theme includes train sets produced during LEGO's partnership with Samsonite, primarily for the North American market in the 1960s. A notable set from this theme is the 113-3 Motorized Train Set, released in 1968. This set featured a motorized train engine, track pieces, and various accessories to create a functional train layout. The 113-3 set was part of LEGO's early efforts to introduce motorized elements into their sets, enhancing playability and adding a dynamic aspect to the building experience. These train sets were crucial in establishing LEGO's reputation for high-quality, imaginative play in North America.
1968 LEGO Sets
1968 was a landmark year with the opening of the first LEGOLAND park in Billund, Denmark, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors. LEGO also introduced the first 12V train motor, spoked wheels, and magnetic couplers, greatly improving the realism of its Train line. The company refined packaging with photo-based idea layouts and transitioned away from the small-scale Town Plan system. This year also marked the arrival of Jens Nygaard Knudsen, who would go on to design the LEGO minifigure and shape future core themes.
