LEGO 1968 Sets

1968 LEGO began phasing in yet another box design. This new design consisted entirely of “idea book”-like images on the front and back. The now familiar LEGO logo was relegated to the side of the box. In many ways it was similar to the box design used by Samsonite for several years. This was a transition year for LEGO with its change ion the new scaling we saw a number of Basic sets adapting this modern scale and older sets with smaller scales being phased out.

The previous year was the last year for individual 1:87 vehicle sales, the sole remaining Town Plan item. Beginning in 1968 the remaining vehicle inventory was packaged and sold as sets. As for parts and sets the train theme continued to progress with the first 12 volt Train motor, spoked wheels, and magnetic bricks were introduced.

In LEGO history, 1968 marked the year that the first LEGOLAND in Billund opened. Also, Jens Nygaard Knudsen joined The LEGO Group as a model builder. Jens is notable for being the creator of the Minifigure and LEGO Space.
