LEGO's Western theme, introduced in 1996, is set in the Old West of the late 19th century, with cowboys, outlaws, cavalry soldiers and Native Americans. The theme was notable for introducing realistic firearms, such as revolvers and rifles, and for giving its Native American figures their own printed faces and headdresses.

Alongside the main sets, LEGO released key chains of characters from the Western series. Notable examples include the Chief Key Chain (set 3962) and the Cowboy Key Chain (set 3974). Each key chain has a non-detachable minifigure fixed to a metal ring and chain.
