LEGO 2009 Sets

In 2009 LEGO proved once again to be a supurb year for collectors with the release of 326 sets, many highly sought after. This included 35 promotional and special released sets in addition to the 291 retail sets released through LEGO.com, the LEGO store and various other retail channels.

Based on the 326 sets released for that year, the retail value was $11,290.93 with a current value of $69,796.24 for the combined new/factory sealed sets. As of present, the best performing theme for 2009 is currently SpongeBob SquarePants which has seen an average annual growth of upwards of 12% to date.

In 2009, LEGO Star Wars celebrated its 10th Anniversary with the release of its 10th Anniversary sets. But even more important, LEGO celebrated its 50th anniversary of the LEGO Brick. A number of new themes were first introduced including BIONICLE Glatorian, Space Police III, Power Miners, Agents 2.0 and LEGO Pirates was re-introduced. Some themes that were retired in 2009 by LEGO included Mars Mission, the original and highly collectable Batman sets. Exo-Force and Belville where also discontinued in 2009.
