LEGO Power Functions, introduced in 2007, are motorized components that enhance various LEGO sets, including trains. These components include motors, battery boxes, lights, and remote controls, allowing trains to move and be controlled remotely. Notable train sets that feature Power Functions include the "Emerald Night" (10194) from 2009, a highly detailed steam locomotive; the "Maersk Train" (10219) from 2011, a freight train set; and the "Horizon Express" (10233) from 2013, a high-speed passenger train. These sets integrate Power Functions elements to provide realistic train operation, making them popular among LEGO train enthusiasts for their added playability and functionality.

2009 celebrated the 10th anniversary of LEGO Star Wars and the 50th anniversary of the LEGO brick. New themes included Space Police III, Power Miners, and a revival of Pirates, while Agents 2.0 continued the high-tech spy concept. LEGO Mindstorms NXT 2.0 refined its robotics platform with enhanced sensors and programmability. The year also saw the conclusion of the original Batman line, Exo-Force, Mars Mission, and Belville, as LEGO phased out older themes in favor of new directions.
