Play Cubes were small Friends sets packed in a plastic cube that also served as a carrying case. They came out in 2020 and 2021, ten each year, two for each of the original five friends, Andrea, Stephanie, Olivia, Mia and Emma. The 2020 cubes gave each girl a job or a shop, like Andrea the singer, Stephanie the baker and Mia at the cinema. In 2021 the cubes were each made up as a pet, a flamingo, a dalmatian, a pug, a cat or a bunny, and a second series showed hobbies such as gaming, soccer, ballet and swimming. Each held a mini-doll figure and a small scene to build.
2021 LEGO Sets
In 2021, LEGO explored digital-physical play with LEGO VIDIYO, a collaboration with Universal Music Group that let users create augmented-reality music videos using minifigures and collectible BeatBits. Although short-lived, the experiment reflected LEGO’s continued pursuit of hybrid play experiences. The LEGO Art series expanded with more display sets inspired by pop culture and design icons, strengthening LEGO’s appeal among adult builders. Established themes such as Star Wars, City, and Technic maintained momentum, while LEGO unveiled prototype bricks made from recycled materials—an early step toward fully sustainable production.
