Insights

Retired long ago, Glider (1187) is a Ninja-era Castle polybag whose sealed scarcity and classic samurai-style ties have supported past upside, and its modest, impulse-format nature introduces higher volatility so future gains will likely depend on collector demand for theme completion rather than parts extraction.

Set Facts

It features a small glider build with two spears and a Ito minifigure in a dark gray suit.
This set had a limited release at New World supermarkets in New Zealand and was also part of a promotional release with Little Chef in the UK.

Glider was designed by LEGO designer Henrik Rubin Saaby.

Brickset

“The minifigure is very well designed with that knife and shuriken printing, and the dark-grey color-scheme really suits him well. I like this version a lot better than the cliché black-colored ones. The glider really is not that big hit when it comes to it's design. But it... More brings you some good parts for your own ideas.”

BrickEconomy Member Review

“The LEGO System Set 1187 "Glider" from 1999 is a simple yet classic set featuring 23 pieces and one ninja minifigure. The minifigure is well-detailed, with a dark gray suit, golden armor, and a black katana, showcasing an early version of the Ninjago theme. Although the glider build is basic, it's a fun addition that offers some playability, and at an affordable price.”

About Castle Ninja

Ninja was a Castle subtheme from 1998 to 2000 and the first time the theme left medieval Europe, for feudal Japan. Its sets had ninja, samurai, a shogun in his stronghold and a band of robbers, with secret doors, hidden weapons and booby traps in the buildings. 6093 Flying Ninja Fortress was the largest set. The line ended in 2000 with minifigure packs. The ninja minifigures brought new headgear and weapons that LEGO used for years after. The idea came back on a much larger scale in 2011 with Ninjago, a theme of its own.

Ninja consists of 29 sets that ran from 1998 to 2000. As of today, 3346 Three Minifig Pack Ninja #3 is the most valuable Ninja set with an estimated new/factory sealed value of $823.
