Eurobricks
“This set truly brings back early memories of Lego trains. It's fun and fairly quick to build (compared to a BNSF or a Super Chief). The set includes some very useful train parts and nice colored elements. I enjoyed building this train and setting up a layout around my... More western town. I think this is a nice nostalgic set for those of you who may look for one on Ebay; and lastly, its a fun train to run with its figs, accessories, and "small" narrow gage look.”

Lego Maniacs' Guide
“This set is a good value for the money. It's worth the price for the special parts. The engine is predominantly black with red trim. The cab has a (non working) coal bunker suggested in the rear by using inverse steep slopes, and is made of 1xN blocks, open at the sides,... More with two triangular notched windows suggested by 1x2 slope openings in the cab front. The cab roof is formed from 3x3 and 3x4 low slopes.”

About Trains 9V

The 9 V system ran from 1991 to 2006 and is still a favourite with LEGO train fans. The rails have metal tops that carry the current from a speed regulator to a motor under the locomotive, so trains could run without batteries for as long as they stayed on the track. It started with 4558 Metroliner in 1991.

9V consists of 67 sets that ran from 1991 to 2006. As of today, 4558 Metroliner is the most valuable 9V set with an estimated new/factory sealed value of $1,989.
