“The Lego 702 12v Motor is the first frontier, into the 12 volt train line. Much like the 100 4.5v motor with wheels, this is an updated version of that. For starters instead of that classic old’ blue motor, it is now a modern sleek black motor piece. This set includes 28... More pieces, and of those 28 pieces, are two different sets of wheels, the motor, and wires, the one set of wheels that came with, is a bigger wheels, and this one did not.”

About Trains 12V

In 1969 LEGO released the 12 volt train sets as part of the Blue Era which was named because of the rail color. These 12V train sets used additional conductor rails mounted between the standard 4.5V rails and 12V motors contained in the same housings as the 4.5V motors, but with additional metal contacts attached to the bottom of the housings.

12V consists of 17 sets that ran from 1969 to 1970. As of today, 722-2 12V Electric Train with 2 Wagons is the most valuable 12V set with an estimated new/factory sealed value of $1,250.

Lego transformer The Lego 12-volt electric motor must be operated with a transformer (12 volts, direct current). Lego has developed such a transformer (item no. 740/220V and 742/110V). It has a stepless speed control and switch for forward and reverse running. The Lego transformer has a simple one-button operation. The transformer housing is double-insulated so that electric shock is impossible. A control lamp shows when the transformer is in operation. There are several electrical connections on the transformer. It is designed to operate all electrical Lego elements, e.g. for light bricks, electric switches, etc. There is only one exception: you cannot drive the 4.5-volt battery train with the transformer.
