LEGO 8035 Universal Set is a Technic Universal set released in 1986, containing 174 pieces. It was issued as a replacement for the original Universal Building Set and includes instructions for five different models. The main builds include a car with rack-and-pinion steering and a small trailer, a crane with a ratcheting winch and a boom that locks at several elevations, and a helicopter with rotating rotors and an oversized undercarriage. Another featured model is a wood chopper that uses a wind turbine to drive an axe mechanism.

“The universal set from the Lego Technic series is a typical set for beginners. Various models can be built from just a few parts. Also, the manual states an option to equip a model with a motor from the 8700 set. However, all the models have not more than a few options,... More sometimes just one. Moreover, they are very simple, which stems from the small number of parts. Accordingly, the overall rating is just two stars. I built and rated what I consider to be the best model.”

The LEGO Technic Universal theme, active from 1982 to 1994, featured versatile sets designed to create multiple models and introduce builders to a wide range of Technic functions and mechanisms.
