“The Universal Set form the Lego Technic series is a set for beginners. Here, the instructions show four different models with simple functions that can be built. I built what I consider to be the best one and rated it accordingly. In the car, the back wheels are driven by... More the engine, and, at the same time, the front wheels are steered. In practice it means that the front wheels constantly turn from left to right and left again, so the car slaloms. It’s astonishing to see how a rotating movement is transformed into an oscillating or an up-and-down movement. Obviously, there’s not much fun. Overall, it gets three stars in the rating.”

“The motor is used in each of the models to drive a variety of functions. In each case except the helicopter, the motor is coupled to the model via a belt (rubber band) to prevent stalling the motor. The motor is underpowered for some of the applications and the belt either... More tends to slip or to stall the motor anyway. The LEGO Technic Universal theme, active from 1982 to 1994, featured versatile sets designed to create multiple models and introduce builders to a wide range of Technic functions and mechanisms.
