LEGO 8480 Space Shuttle is a Technic set released in 1996, containing 1368 pieces. It features a 9V Technic motor that drives multiple functions, including opening the payload bay doors, lifting and rotating the Remote Manipulator Arm, and powering the fiber optic system, while a micromotor unfolds the satellite’s solar arrays. The fiber optic unit routes light to the main engines and other points through bundled fibers controlled by two electrical switches. An alternate build converts the parts into a motorized submarine with repurposed functions.

About Technic

TECHNIC is one of The LEGO Company's main lines based on creating detailed model machines and mechanical toys with specialized beams, axles, gears and connectors and primarily designed for older children and adults. The theme was first introduced as the Expert Builder series in 1977, but was officially renamed as TECHNIC in 1984. LEGO TECHNIC "FOS Light” Space Shuttle. This magnificent model has two motors. The LEGO TECHNIC motor controls four functions: Open the hatches (1), lifting the Canadian Arm (2), turning it (3) and the FOS Light (4). The micro motor unfolds the satellite’s wings (A). If that's not enough you can build a gigantic submarine instead and use the motors for other incredible functions.
