LEGO 1290-1 Lava Buggy is a Technic Robo Riders promotional set released in 2000, containing 35 pieces. It was issued in Japan as a Kabaya candy promotion and features a small wheeled vehicle with a head design similar to 8510 Lava. The model is the same build as set 8003 Volcano Climber, which was also released in 2000 under the standard Robo Riders line. Lava Buggy was one of four Kabaya Technic Robo Riders promotional sets, alongside 1291, 1292, and 1293.

“Being a promotional set, 1290 doesn't have a plethora of pieces, but it's got the usual suspects; some Technic lift arms, and the signature headpiece of the RoboRiders. Volcano Climber also has a few rubber bands, indicating some kind of function; these have survived well in... More their packaging, though I imagine they won't last quite so long now exposed to the elements. I've sealed away the spares, for a rainy day.”

About Technic Robo Riders

LEGO Robo Riders (RoboRiders) was a TECHNIC theme launched in 2000 that were designed as robotic, anthropomorphic bikes, complete with a faceplate and special gear to suggest adaption to a specific environment. The Robo Riders succeeded Slizer and was replaced by BIONICLE in 2001 with only eight retail and eight promotional sets being released.

Robo Riders was introduced in 2000 and currently consists of 16 sets. As of today, 8516 Super RoboRider is the most valuable Robo Riders set with an estimated new/factory sealed value of $120.
