Brickset
“There is a mechanism that allows you to unload the freight. The freight itself is also included in this set: round 1x1 bricks. I think this set is a great addition to 4563 or crocodile engine 4551. Maybe you'll also like it as an addition to Hopper Wagon 10017. Both 4536 and... More 10017 serve the same purpose.”

BrickTrains-Sets
“The 4536 Blue Hopper Car is an attachment to any 9 volt line train sets. Unfortunately, it does not work on 4.5, or 12 volt train tracks, because they are flat wheeled, and the 4.5 tracks are ridged. The 4536 Blue Hopper Car includes 166, including a small docking area to... More put the cargo. It would make a nice attachment to any 9 volt set.”

About Trains 9V

The 9 V system ran from 1991 to 2006 and is still a favourite with LEGO train fans. The rails have metal tops that carry the current from a speed regulator to a motor under the locomotive, so trains could run without batteries for as long as they stayed on the track. It started with 4558 Metroliner in 1991.

9V consists of 67 sets that ran from 1991 to 2006. As of today, 4558 Metroliner is the most valuable 9V set with an estimated new/factory sealed value of $1,989.
Summary
Trains 9V Blue Hopper Car set 4536 was released in September 1991, retailing for $15, but has since been retired. New, unopened Blue Hopper Car sets are valued at $199, while used sets can be found for $93.
