One of the earliest however is '4546' - a Road and Rail Maintenance vehicle that sports small model which can be run on either 9v track or, thanks... More to its wheels, on the road.”

“The truck is used to keep the tracks clean and detect any track irregularities and point malfunctions. Unfortunately, LEGO did not immediately release the Road N' Rail Repair digger with the truck. That might have triggered quite some LEGO cities to replace the 12V rails by... More the new 9V system much sooner. But well, when the rail and road digger was finally released, a lot of LEGO railroad officials decided to put it to good use, both for the older 12V tracks and newer 9V railroads.”

About Trains 9V

LEGO Trains is one of the longer running themes that dates back from 1966 and ran up until 2006. During its run there were multiple sets released running on various power platforms from 4.5volt, to 9 and 12 volt sets. Later in 2011 LEGO released additional train sets using RC and Power Functions controllers under different themes like City.

9V consists of 67 sets that ran from 1991 to 2006. As of today, 4558 Metroliner is the most valuable 9V set with an estimated new/factory sealed value of $1,653.
