“Police Headquarters is a fairly small set at 372 pieces but back then things were different. The set features 4 police officers dressed in black – a helicopter pilot, a motorcycle office and a patrol officer – and one in blue. There’s 3 different vehicles as you may have... More guessed from the picture – a motorcycle, a car and a helicopter.”

Gimme Lego
“The set includes four 'modern-style' minifigures with articulating arms and legs. Modern minifigures started to appear in sets in 1978 so would still have been something of a novelty in 1979 when Set 588 was released. The build commences with a trio of vehicles. First up is... More a classic 4-wide Police car which, like so many such vehicles of its day, is constructed on a vehicle base. LEGO fans of a certain vintage will also immediately recognize the wheel arches, steering wheel and windscreen which were ubiquitous in small vehicles back in the day.”

About Town Classic

The LEGO Town Classic theme, active from 1978 to 1981, introduced foundational sets that established the urban layout concept in the LEGO world. Notable sets include 1592 Town Square Castle Scene, which combined medieval and modern elements, and 381-2 Police Headquarters, a prominent city infrastructure piece. The 379 Bus Station provided public transport centrality, while 600-2 Police Car offered essential city law enforcement. These sets, among others, played a critical role in defining the classic LEGO town aesthetic.

Classic consists of 45 sets that ran from 1978 to 1981. As of today, 1592 Town Square Castle Scene is the most valuable Classic set with an estimated new/factory sealed value of $2,651.
