Insights

Released in 1980 and now retired, Mobile Lab (6901) draws continued collector interest for its classic Space printed elements and red-and-white astronaut figures, and scarce sealed examples support steady post-retirement demand while vintage-market volatility and limited remake risk temper expectations.

Set Facts

It includes a small laboratory on six wheels and a red and white classic spaceman minifigures.
This set was the second largest Space set released in 1980, even though it only contained 135 pieces.

Brickset

“6901 is celebrating its 40th birthday this year and I think it holds up well in terms of build experience. There's nothing tricky here, but it is an enjoyable build. If we were in 1980, I could definitely recommend the 6901 for the RRP, but at today's market prices (if you... More can find one), not so much.”

“Elevated vehicle with opening side doors, radar, articulated arm that could hold either a sensor array or a shovel with two astronauts and a pair of accessories. There’s nothing inside the vehicle (other than a steering wheel) to make it a lab. It can’t fit both the second... More astronaut and the sensor array at the same time. It looks a bit ridiculous with those 12 tiny wheels.”

About Space Classic

Classic Space began in 1978, the same year as the LEGO minifigure, and it was one of the first three themes to use it, along with Castle and Town. The astronauts came in red and white at first, with yellow, black and blue added in the 1980s, all in the same suit with the planet logo on the chest and an air tank on the back. Unlike almost every space line after it, Classic Space had no villains, only explorers with rovers, rockets, lunar bases and grey crater baseplates.

Classic consists of 90 sets that ran from 1978 to 2015. As of today, 926 Command Center is the most valuable Classic set with an estimated new/factory sealed value of $4,799.

Summary

Space Classic Mobile Lab set 6901 was released in April 1980, retailing for $13, but has since been retired. New, unopened Mobile Lab sets are valued at $600, while used sets can be found for $85 in good condition.

LEGOLAND Space In the world of LEGOLAND there are 3 play ideas - Town, Castle and Space. You can build your own planet with the special base plates and go exploring far, far out in space with the space ships, rockets and radar vehicles.
