“The 8837 wheeled excavator, released in 1992, is a goofy little set. It is highly functional for its size, but the proportions are wrong somehow. This model uses one normal sized pneumatic actuator and one of the new small variety. It also uses the new small scoop. Its... More best feature, in my opinion, is the central axle which controls two functions, steering and slewing. This is the only set to use the central ring gear of the turntable.”

“The Pneumatic Excavator from the Lego Technic series is regarded as an entry-level model for pneumatic technology. From a relatively small number of parts a very nice model is built here, which still has many functions. The result is a realistic excavator that makes a lot of... More fun. Unfortunately the control via the pneumatic elements is a bit rough - the control of the boom, and especially of the bucket, is very rough. Therefore there are only five stars in the overall rating.”

About Technic

TECHNIC is one of The LEGO Company's main lines based on creating detailed model machines and mechanical toys with specialized beams, axles, gears and connectors and primarily designed for older children and adults. The theme was first introduced as the Expert Builder series in 1977, but was officially renamed as TECHNIC in 1984. TECHNIC is still an active theme, and is one of the longest running themes in LEGO history. While most TECHNIC sets are vehicles that use pieces to mimic real vehicles, such as engine pieces, suspension, pneumatic, and transmission pieces, the TECHNIC parts have been used by various other System themes as well as LEGO Mindstorms.
Summary
Technic Pneumatic Excavator set 8837 was released in May 1992, retailing for $47, but has since been retired. New, unopened Pneumatic Excavator sets are valued at $158, while used sets can be found for $37.
