Set Facts

Shackleton's lifeboat, famously known as the James Caird, was one of the three lifeboats from the Endurance, Ernest Shackleton's ship during his 1914–1917 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. After Endurance became trapped and ultimately crushed by pack ice in the Weddell Sea, Shackleton and his crew were stranded on the drifting ice floes.
In April 1916, Shackleton and five others embarked on an 800-mile journey in the James Caird lifeboat from Elephant Island to South Georgia to seek help. After 16 challenging days, they reached their destination, leading to the eventual rescue of all 28 men.
