LEGO 8851 Excavator is a Technic set released in 1984, containing 347 pieces. The model depicts a tracked excavator powered by a first-generation single-acting pneumatic system with three pneumatic actuators, a long-stroke hand pump, and three control valves, with rubber tubing routed through beam holes; the main boom can be pneumatically raised, aided by rubber bands. It was the first LEGO set to use multiple pneumatic actuators and is one of only two to include the long-stroke pneumatic pump. The set also introduced a specially molded excavator bucket element.

“This was the first larger model from Lego Technic with the pneumatic function. Unfortunately, it’s noticeable because the pneumatic elements weren’t fully ready yet for series production (e.g. the raising and lowering of the boom only works with the support of rubber rings).... More Otherwise, it’s a very nice model.”

“Set 8851 was released in 1984 as the flagship example of the new pneumatic system. It does not feature any traditional Technic geared systems. Instead, all technical functions are carried out via pneumatic actuators which makes this model less mechanically complex than... More many others of this size. Despite this fact, the model is quite difficult to build. There are many tubes in the chassis which have to be routed just right in order for the whole thing to fit together.”

TECHNIC is one of The LEGO Company's main lines based on creating detailed model machines and mechanical toys with specialized beams, axles, gears and connectors and primarily designed for older children and adults. The theme was first introduced as the Expert Builder series in 1977, but was officially renamed as TECHNIC in 1984.
