Insights

Released long ago and now retired, Car Chassis 8860 is an early Technic milestone with advanced mechanical functions, and its scarce sealed supply and low remake risk have supported collector interest; condition sensitivity and a relatively small vintage Technic market add volatility.

The Lego Car Blog

“Overall, this superb set deserves a 10/10 – it might not be flawless but, for the time, it's deeply impressive and still stands up today as a good-looking, effective model. Get one and you'll see why it was good enough to sit at the top of the Technic tree for eight years.”

“Set 8860, released in 1980, was the second generation auto chassis and improved upon the technology in the previous version, set 853, in almost every way (except size). This set clearly represented the state-of-the-art in LEGO® at the time. It features a 4 cylinder... More reciprocating engine, a 3 speed transmission, a working rear differential, working rear suspension, rack and pinion steering, and adjustable and reclining seats.”

About Technic

TECHNIC is one of The LEGO Company's main lines based on creating detailed model machines and mechanical toys with specialized beams, axles, gears and connectors and primarily designed for older children and adults. The theme was first introduced as the Expert Builder series in 1977, but was officially renamed as TECHNIC in 1984. TECHNIC is still an active theme, and is one of the longest running themes in LEGO history. While most TECHNIC sets are vehicles that use pieces to mimic real vehicles, such as engine pieces, suspension, pneumatic, and transmission pieces, the TECHNIC parts have been used by various other System themes as well as LEGO Mindstorms.

Technical Sets for experienced builders
LEGO Technical Sets are for experienced LEGO builders from 9 years who like to work with technical problems. These detailed working models with gears and steering and working pistons are challenging but rewarding to build. Instruction books detail 2 or more different models from each set.
