LEGO 641-1 Excavator is a Town Classic set released in 1978, containing 41 pieces and 1 minifigure. It builds a compact yellow excavator and includes a construction worker in a striped vest for roadside work scenes. Due to the small scale and design, the minifigure cannot be seated inside the excavator. As an early Classic Town release, it features simple construction and pared-back detailing characteristic of late-1970s LEGO vehicles.

Basic Excavator - which is great! — “Another set of transition era. Even the construction philosophy of the mini-wheel era, the minifigure is not compatible with the vehicle, unfortunately you cannot put the minifigure in the vehicle. Now it knows as much compared to today’s sets as a polybag set. There are a... More couple of rare parts: the black hinge, the yellow vest, the 2x2x2 transparent slope brick, stickers.”

The LEGO Town Classic theme, active from 1978 to 1981, introduced foundational sets that established the urban layout concept in the LEGO world. Notable sets include 1592 Town Square Castle Scene, which combined medieval and modern elements, and 381-2 Police Headquarters, a prominent city infrastructure piece. The 379 Bus Station provided public transport centrality, while 600-2 Police Car offered essential city law enforcement. These sets, among others, played a critical role in defining the classic LEGO town aesthetic.

Classic consists of 45 sets that ran from 1978 to 1981. As of today, 1592 Town Square Castle Scene is the most valuable Classic set with an estimated new/factory sealed value of $2,573.
