“This is a great set that still makes me happy to look at it. Maybe it's through a nostalgic veil that I look, but I think any Lego lover would be somewhat delighted to get their hands on this cleverly made, truly fun creation.”

“The Galaxy Commander. Owning one is a dream of nostalgic AFOLS everywhere. As internet prices show, still a popular kit, in part due to the limited supply. This model brings a smile to my heart and lives in the center of my Lego Lunar City.”

“The largest Classic Space set and the only one to come with five astronauts. This was the flagship update to 1979’s Galaxy Explorer (497). This ship carries its own base with it. The white, blue, and transparent dark blue color scheme is similar to that seen in the Cosmic... More Cruiser. This was the last ship to come with its own landing pad.”

About Space Classic

Classic Space began in 1978, the same year as the LEGO minifigure, and it was one of the first three themes to use it, along with Castle and Town. The astronauts came in red and white at first, with yellow, black and blue added in the 1980s, all in the same suit with the planet logo on the chest and an air tank on the back. Unlike almost every space line after it, Classic Space had no villains, only explorers with rovers, rockets, lunar bases and grey crater baseplates.

Classic consists of 90 sets that ran from 1978 to 2015. As of today, 926 Command Center is the most valuable Classic set with an estimated new/factory sealed value of $4,799.
Summary
Space Classic Galaxy Commander set 6980 was released in February 1983, retailing for $60, but has since been retired. New, unopened Galaxy Commander sets are valued at $2,600, while used sets can be found for $155.
