Brickset
Short-lived and iconic — “I guess that the Lego authorities felt that 7730 was a little bit outdated, so they decided to release an improved version. They did well, but it wouldn't last for long until 7727 would vanish from the shelves. It is a kind of funny fact, that some 1983 sets have been sold... More for only two years, while other 1983 sets lasted until the end in 1990.”

“This set reminds me a lot of the 7750: Steam Engine with Tender from 1980, it has the similar style of a train engine and its part of the 12 volt line. This set includes 570 pieces, and of those 570 pieces it includes four train cars, and two minifigures. The minifigures are... More both identical, while the train cars are completely different from each other.”

About Trains 4.5V / 12V

4512V covers the LEGO trains of the 4.5 V and 12 V systems from the 1970s and 1980s. The 4.5 V trains ran on batteries carried in a wagon or tender, while the 12 V trains drew power from conductor rails laid between the running rails, fed by a transformer with a speed control. Until 1980 the track was blue, which gave these years the name of the Blue Era.

4.5V / 12V consists of 83 sets that ran from 1972 to 1986. As of today, 7750 Steam Engine with Tender is the most valuable 4.5V / 12V set with an estimated new/factory sealed value of $6,368.
Summary
Trains 4.5V / 12V Freight Steam Train Set set 7727 was released in October 1983, retailing for $80, but has since been retired. New, unopened Freight Steam Train Set sets are valued at $1,210, while used sets can be found for $267.
