“The set uses point motors as used in the sets 7563 / 7858 and 7589 to operate the road barriers. The wiring in order to make the set work properly is somewhat complicated, with an electronic flasher unit which attaches onto the remote control to operate the flashing lights.”

“Are you looking for a classic 1980s set with a great amount of single-used special parts? Well, try this one. Light bricks, crossing sign, flash light unit, but of course all of them are necessary to enable the special features.”

“The Lego 7866 Remote Controlled Road Crossing 12v is much like the 7862: Remote Controlled Decoupling and Signal 12 V, because you have the ability to stop a train with a push of a button. Except that this set doesn’t stop the train from moving, it stops the people from... More moving into the train! The Remote controlled road crossing is a road crossing that can close and opened, manually and automatically.”

About Trains 4.5V / 12V

4512V covers the LEGO trains of the 4.5 V and 12 V systems from the 1970s and 1980s. The 4.5 V trains ran on batteries carried in a wagon or tender, while the 12 V trains drew power from conductor rails laid between the running rails, fed by a transformer with a speed control. Until 1980 the track was blue, which gave these years the name of the Blue Era.

4.5V / 12V consists of 83 sets that ran from 1972 to 1986. As of today, 7750 Steam Engine with Tender is the most valuable 4.5V / 12V set with an estimated new/factory sealed value of $6,368.
Summary
Trains 4.5V / 12V Remote Controlled Road Crossing 12 V set 7866 was released in October 1983, retailing for $60, but has since been retired. New, unopened Remote Controlled Road Crossing 12 V sets are valued at $735, while used sets can be found for $162 in good condition.
