“This is a little gem. It is not that big, but has great parts and an extra wagon (as the first one of only three grey era sets). Other parts like the crane bucket and the tipper ends were really old, even at time of release. But again, the set is missing the conducting... More rails. I cannot see the logic behind it, why some sets were equipped with them while others weren't.”

“The Lego 7838 Freight Loading Depot is similar to the 165: Cargo Station, except with a bigger crane. The sets have similar applications, but for different purposes. This set has a large crane that goes back and forth, to pick up pieces of coal, while the165 has a small... More crane that also, goes back and forth but can only hold small boxes. This set includes 315 pieces, and of those pieces it comes with a dump truck like wagon, and three minifigures. This would make a great installment to any Lego train track.”

About Trains 4.5V / 12V

In 1972 LEGO released the 4.5V and 12V train sets as part of the Blue Era which was named because of the rail color. These train sets used additional conductor rails mounted between the standard 4.5V rails and 12V motors contained in the same housings as the 4.5V motors, but with additional metal contacts attached to the bottom of the housings.

4.5V / 12V consists of 83 sets that ran from 1972 to 1986. As of today, 7730 Electric Goods Train Set is the most valuable 4.5V / 12V set with an estimated new/factory sealed value of $5,400.
