1989 LEGO Sets

While 1989 proved overall to be a light year for long term investments, with the release of 139 sets, LEGO did see a number of highly sought after and collections that have experienced significant and steady growth for collectors overall.

Based on the 139 sets released for that year, the retail value was $1,688.35 with a current value of $42,659.82 for the combined new/factory sealed sets. As of present, the best performing theme for 1989 is currently Promotional which has seen an average annual growth of upwards of 9% to date. With the 41 sets that year, the Service Packs theme had the most released sets.

1989 was a landmark year with the global debut of LEGO Pirates, introducing expressive minifigure faces, large sailing ships, and the Imperials vs. buccaneers conflict. Space Police I launched as a law-and-order counterpoint to Blacktron, while Model Team continued to grow with realistic, detail-rich vehicles for older builders.
