In 1996 LEGO released 196 sets, many of which today are highly collectable and have proved to be solid investments to the LEGO collector community.

Based on the 196 sets released for that year, the retail value was $3,930.68 with a current value of $31,061.49 for the combined new/factory sealed sets. As of present, the best performing theme for 1996 is currently Castle which has seen an average annual growth of upwards of 9% to date. All together 1996 saw the release of sets covering 18 themes and 30 subthemes with Duplo having the highest release count of 36 sets.

1996 marked LEGO’s early digital pivot with the creation of LEGO Media and the launch of LEGO.com, establishing the company’s online presence. LEGO Technic was rebranded for global consistency, and several new themes expanded creative play. Wild West explored frontier adventures, Dark Forest revived outlaw factions within Castle, and Time Cruisers combined multiple eras through time travel. Exploriens emphasized scientific exploration within Space, while Pirates introduced the Imperial Armada, expanding LEGO’s nautical storytelling universe.
