1997 LEGO Sets

1997 saw the release of 249 sets with 32 of them available for promotions and special releases.While many sets of the later 90s are not necessarily considered collection worthy, a number of sets in 1997 have proved to be solid investments.

Based on the 249 sets released for that year, the retail value was $4,574.57 with a current value of $29,912.19 for the combined new/factory sealed sets. As of present, the best performing theme for 1997 is currently Pirates which has seen an average annual growth of upwards of 8% to date.

1997 saw LEGO’s first major sales decline, prompting experimentation and digital expansion. LEGO Island introduced the brand’s first open-world video game, setting the stage for future digital storytelling. New subthemes included Divers for underwater exploration, Fright Knights for gothic medieval fantasy, and Time Twisters as a sequel to Time Cruisers. LEGO Space added Roboforce and UFO, shifting toward alien-focused designs, while Aquazone expanded with Aquaraiders. Despite challenges, LEGO’s creativity remained strong across both physical and emerging digital platforms.
