2014

2014 was yet another great year for LEGO collectors and investors. 2014 saw a staggering 560 sets released, not including gear or books, with 94 promotional and not for retail sets.

Based on the 560 sets released for that year, the retail value was $15,887.71 with a current value of $58,949.42 for the combined new/factory sealed sets. As of present, the best performing theme for 2014 is currently Castle which has seen an average annual growth of upwards of 15% to date. All together 2014 saw the release of sets covering 29 themes and 104 subthemes with Legends of Chima having the highest release count of 59 sets.

2014 was a very important year for LEGO. With the release of The LEGO Movie at the beginning of the year, LEGO was introduced to a whole new generation and population of LEGO lovers, collectors and investors. In addition to the movie, LEGO celebrated the 15th anniversary of LEGO Star Wars and even more important was the decision to continue the Ninjago theme which was originally slated to be discontinued. 2014 also gave collectors the minifigure-scale Minecraft theme based off the widely popular game. New themes that year included Juniors, The LEGO Movie, Mixels, The Simpsons, Ultra Agents, Fusion and Disney Princess. In addition, we did see a number of discontinued themes such as Galaxy Squad, Lone Ranger and The Lord of The Rings.

For collectors though, one set that truly stands out is the Marina Bay Sands (21021-1) Architrecture set, with other sets like Mini Cooper MK VII (10242-1) sure to be a solid investment.
