LEGO 7730 Electric Goods Train Set was a 512 piece Trains set with 2 minifigs released in 1980. It features a detailed steam locomotive with opening cab doors and windows, fitted with a 12V motor for powered operation. Its design is inspired by the Deutsche Bahn Baureihe 80, a German shunting locomotive built in the late 1920s. Behind the engine are three distinctive freight wagons: an open-top hopper for coal or gravel, a refrigerated boxcar with sliding doors for perishable goods, and a tanker-style silo wagon. The train runs on 12V grey track and was sold with a transformer and electrical connections for full operation. In addition to the rolling stock, the set included cargo accessories such as barrels and crates, and two minifigures.

“This set was a basic entry into the 12v world, therefore it surely was a very important element of the product range. But it is not as iconic as its successor 7727 or as the famous 7740. Compared to set 7710, the steam locomotive is more advanced: is has doors, is has a... More motor, it doesn't look so basic. All in all, it is obvious that Lego wanted to provide variety, even if things looked similar at first glance.”

About Trains 4.5V / 12V

In 1972 LEGO released the 4.5V and 12V train sets as part of the Blue Era which was named because of the rail color. These train sets used additional conductor rails mounted between the standard 4.5V rails and 12V motors contained in the same housings as the 4.5V motors, but with additional metal contacts attached to the bottom of the housings.

4.5V / 12V consists of 83 sets that ran from 1972 to 1986. As of today, 7750 Steam Engine with Tender is the most valuable 4.5V / 12V set with an estimated new/factory sealed value of $6,957.
