LEGO 7860-1 Remote Controlled Signal 12 V is a Trains 4.5V / 12V accessory set released in 1980, containing 24 pieces. It includes a signal post, a remote control switch, and two modified conducting breaker rails for use with the 12V train system. The signal changes between red and green, and the breaker rails cut power to stop a train at a red signal and allow it to continue when the signal is switched to green. “The 7860 Remote Controlled Signal 12v is not a re-release of any current set, but a new track piece. The set includes 24 pieces, one being the light signal. Much like the road signals, the light of your choosing (red or green) will determine if the train will stop or go.... More From my understanding, the set actually cuts off electricity from the track therefore, stopping the train and vice versa. This would make an excellent addition to any Lego train track.”

“Reliable operation of the system depends on both the speed of the train, where if the train is running too fast, it can jump the signal; the motor will then overshoot the broken circuit section and then restart suddenly usually causing the magnetic train couplings to be... More overcome and the locomotive running away. The normal remedy to this is to space the breaker rails farther apart.”

About Trains 4.5V / 12V

In 1972 LEGO released the 4.5V and 12V train sets as part of the Blue Era which was named because of the rail color. These train sets used additional conductor rails mounted between the standard 4.5V rails and 12V motors contained in the same housings as the 4.5V motors, but with additional metal contacts attached to the bottom of the housings.

4.5V / 12V consists of 83 sets that ran from 1972 to 1986. As of today, 7750 Steam Engine with Tender is the most valuable 4.5V / 12V set with an estimated new/factory sealed value of $6,957.
