Insights

Released during the grey-era as a 12V Trains accessory, Remote Controlled Decoupling and Signal 12V (7862) draws on strong nostalgia and low remake risk that supports scarcity for sealed and complete examples, and its niche demand and thin market can produce intermittent volatility alongside long-term collector interest.

Brickset

“Introduced in 1981, this set enhances your train layout bay a remote-controlled decoupling unit. It is the only remote-controlled element that did not last until 1990, because it was dropped from the line-up in 1985. This is the only item of the grey era which is a little... More bit flawed. It works fine, as long everything is adjusted perfectly. If this isn't the case, there will be problems and malfunction. Maybe this was the reason why it was discontinued after 1984.”

BrickTrains-Sets

“The Lego 7862 Remote Controlled Decoupling and Signal, is another form of a train signal for the 12 volt line. The basics of this set are, when you push a button on the remote, it will either de-electrify, or electrify the special rail that came with it. The set comes with... More sixteen pieces, and of those sixteen pieces, is a remote control that stops the train, and the track itself. This would make a great addition to any Lego Train Track.”

About Trains 4.5V / 12V

4512V covers the LEGO trains of the 4.5 V and 12 V systems from the 1970s and 1980s. The 4.5 V trains ran on batteries carried in a wagon or tender, while the 12 V trains drew power from conductor rails laid between the running rails, fed by a transformer with a speed control. Until 1980 the track was blue, which gave these years the name of the Blue Era.

4.5V / 12V consists of 83 sets that ran from 1972 to 1986. As of today, 7750 Steam Engine with Tender is the most valuable 4.5V / 12V set with an estimated new/factory sealed value of $6,368.
