It was designed as an upgrade pack for push-along or 4.5V train models and includes a black 12V motor, two weight bricks, two pistons with four connecting rods, and two 2x4 plates. The set appeared in LEGO catalogs from 1980 through 1990 as part of the 12V train system. Two versions of the steam cylinder element are known, with or without interior grooves, and the packaging changed in 1989 from a Styrofoam tray with a cardboard sleeve to a redesigned box without Styrofoam.

Spare part or upgrade — “This set was both intended as spare part and as upgrade kit. Besides the motor itself, it contains two weight bricks and some decorative parts that are useful for steam engines. If you need to replace a non-working black motor, you needed this set. But when talking about the... More upgrade scenario, I never understood why they put a black motor into this set. Because 7720 is the only upgrade-able set that requires a black motor. All other upgrade-able sets (7710, 7715, 7722 and 7810) are steam engines, therefore they would require a red motor.”

About Trains 4.5V / 12V

In 1972 LEGO released the 4.5V and 12V train sets as part of the Blue Era which was named because of the rail color. These train sets used additional conductor rails mounted between the standard 4.5V rails and 12V motors contained in the same housings as the 4.5V motors, but with additional metal contacts attached to the bottom of the housings.

4.5V / 12V consists of 83 sets that ran from 1972 to 1986. As of today, 7750 Steam Engine with Tender is the most valuable 4.5V / 12V set with an estimated new/factory sealed value of $6,957.
