“The 7850 8 Straight grey rails is much like older train track from the past, this is a more updated version of the 4.5 rails. The only difference is the color of the rail itself. My explanation is that Lego decided to have their 4.5 line to a older audience, but the baby... More blue color of the previous tracks make it look like a child’s toy. Other than that, there is no difference between the two, other than choice of colors.”

“The grey era came with a great number of track options and accessories. Most were released in 1980, including this set 7850. Set 7850 contains 8 sections of straight track, with each section being composed of 2 straight rails and 2 sleeper plates. These sections are suitable... More for push-along trains and 4.5V motors. If you want to use them for 12V trains, you also have to add a conducting rail 7854.”

About Trains 4.5V / 12V

In 1972 LEGO released the 4.5V and 12V train sets as part of the Blue Era which was named because of the rail color. These train sets used additional conductor rails mounted between the standard 4.5V rails and 12V motors contained in the same housings as the 4.5V motors, but with additional metal contacts attached to the bottom of the housings.

4.5V / 12V consists of 83 sets that ran from 1972 to 1986. As of today, 7750 Steam Engine with Tender is the most valuable 4.5V / 12V set with an estimated new/factory sealed value of $6,957.
