LEGO 7740 Inter-City Passenger Train Set is a Trains 4.5V/12V set released in 1980, containing 786 pieces and 10 minifigures. The 12V electric set includes a large locomotive with working lights and a removable roof, two passenger coaches—one configured as a dining car—a large station platform, and a full circular track with additional straight sections.

The train’s red-and-cream livery was inspired by the German Trans Europ Express “Rheingold.” Appearing in LEGO catalogs from 1980 to 1984, it was the flagship of the updated 12V train system. The set is also known as Electric Inner-City Train 12V.

A true flagship — “It's a flagship, and it's a highlight. It's a must-have for every collector of the grey 12v era. A huge passenger train, equipped with lights and lots of minifigs. Thanks to the new (from 1980s perspective) 6x28 baseplate, it is huge. And it looks different than any other... More train engines of the new system. It has lights, a dummy engine, and the roof can be removed. The yellow and red color scheme makes it look special, but it was re-used in later sets (7722 and 7735).”

“The length of the 7740 locomotive is not the only thing that surprised me – the second thing is its weight. With the 12V train motor and two 2x6x2 train weights, plus all the regular bricks that go into the fairly detailed build, the 7740 locomotive weighs 576 grams or 20.3... More ounces. Compared to this, the push-along 7710 locomotive (which lacks motor and weights) at 153 grams, 5.4 ounces, feels feathery light. The 7740 locomotive weighs almost four times as much. As a result, the 7740 locomotive feels almost unlegolike, picking it up seems like you could really hurt someone with it.”

About Trains 4.5V / 12V

In 1972 LEGO released the 4.5V and 12V train sets as part of the Blue Era which was named because of the rail color. These train sets used additional conductor rails mounted between the standard 4.5V rails and 12V motors contained in the same housings as the 4.5V motors, but with additional metal contacts attached to the bottom of the housings.

4.5V / 12V consists of 83 sets that ran from 1972 to 1986. As of today, 7750 Steam Engine with Tender is the most valuable 4.5V / 12V set with an estimated new/factory sealed value of $6,957.
