Set Value (New/Sealed)

This represents the current new/sealed value of the set Basic Building Set with Train since January 1967. Medium accuracy

LEGO 080-1 Basic Building Set with Train is a Classic Basic Set released in 1967, containing 718 pieces. It is an early region-exclusive set that introduced a simple push-along LEGO train, with a four-stud-wide locomotive, boxcar, and flatcar designed to run on blue rails. The set also includes four buildings built on dedicated base plates, two vehicles, and an early mini-land style policeman figure that is not in scale with the rest of the models. It was sold in continental Europe, excluding the UK, and later appeared in the United States through FAO Schwarz, where it was offered from 1969 to 1970 as “The Ambassador Set.” Based on current trends, this set could be valued near $3,665 within the next year.

Basic Building Set with Train (080-1) is a very old and rare LEGO set. It has not been available online or in retail stores in good/new condition for over 2 years. Because of its scarcity, the current estimated value of in new condition of $3,388.01 may be much lower than its true market value. Released in 1967, sealed sets in good condition are especially difficult to find, often commanding a premium well above estimates.

Insights

Released as a Continental Europe–only Classic Basic Set, Basic Building Set with Train (set 080) is an early LEGO train release with blue rails that draws steady collector interest for its historical role, and its short production run left sealed examples scarce, while thin trading volume and condition sensitivity can cause valuation swings.

Set Facts

The 080 Basic set is available from 1968 to 1970 and is sold exclusively in continental Europe, excluding Britain, Australia, and North America, except through the luxury U.S. toy retailer FAO Schwarz.
From 1969 to 1970, FAO Schwarz offers the set as "The Ambassador Set," sold exclusively in their flagship Manhattan store on 5th Avenue or via their retailer catalog.
The set includes a four-stud-wide train with a locomotive, a boxcar, and a flatcar designed to run on blue tracks.
The set includes four distinct buildings, each built on a unique, specially designed baseplate tailored for that structure.
The set includes two vehicles and a "mini-land" style policeman figure that is out of scale compared to the rest of the set.

BrickEconomy Member Review

“This vintage LEGO train set from 1967 features a simplistic four-stud-wide locomotive paired with three minimalist cars. The standout elements are the four unique buildings, each with specially designed base plates, and the inclusion of two small vehicles and a disproportionate mini land-style figure. While the train lacks complexity and functionality, the set's historical significance make it a noteworthy collector's piece.”

About Classic Basic Set

These are the plain LEGO basic sets of the 1960s, boxes of bricks without a theme, sold for building whatever the owner liked. They came in cardboard boxes in a range of sizes, numbered by size. Promotions were part of the story too. Sets were made for the New York World's Fair of 1964, and in 1969 small sets were given away with Quaker's Life cereal in the United States. One modern set, 10654 XL Creative Brick Box from 2016, is filed here as well.

Basic Set consists of 23 sets that ran from 1963 to 2016. As of today, 080 Basic Building Set with Train is the most valuable Basic Set set with an estimated new/factory sealed value of $3,388.

This set includes pieces for trees, houses, a railroad terminal, a train, and enough track to create the oval layout shown. Additionally, it contains items such as gates, fences, and even a policeman, enhancing its realism. A highly complete set that makes a welcome addition to any existing LEGO collection. Shipping weight: 5 lbs.
